Shuttle and Delta launches postponed to Friday (and again to the weekend)

Two space launches were scrubbed today - a space shuttle and a Delta on opposite coasts. Both will try again Friday. [and more delays now noted in the comments.] Here are more details...

In Florida, the Space Shuttle Atlantis launch was postponed today due to liquid hydrogen fuel tank level sensor problems. The new launch time will be 23:09 GMT, 4:09PM Eastern, 1:09PM Pacific. Atlantis will deliver the European Space Agency's Columbus module to the International Space Station.

In California, a Boeing Delta II rocket to launch Italy's COSMO-2 satellite was scrubbed. This launch was already scrubbed on Wednesday due to high winds aloft. This time a pre-launch inspection found some thermal insulation on the rocket needs to be repaired. The new launch time will be 0231 GMT (Saturday morning), 9:31PM Eastern, 6:31PM Pacific. COSMO-2 is a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite for high-precision topographic mapping. Italy plans to use it for mapping and observation of geographical changes (like coastal erosion) in the Mediterranean region.
